Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicken and Dumplings, Fried Green Tomatoes, Cornbread, Collard Greens, and Sugared Pecans! By any measure, the Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Georgia is as southern as you can get. Proprietor Billie Van Dyke says that no one is allowed to leave hungry, and certainly no one should after feasting on a variety of Southern salads, meats, vegetables, breads and desserts and, of course, sweet tea, the "Champagne of the South," and lemonade. Housed in a gloriously restored southern mansion, The Blue Willow Inn is home to Southern hospitality and charm at its best. The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook offers delicious Southern recipes, vintage pictures from the early days of Social Circle, and fascinating anecdotes about the restaurant. It's a book that's wonderful for reading or for cooking. The greatest restaurants in America are its wonderful independent regional restaurants. And there are no greater experts on America's regional restaurants than Michael and Jane Stern. "Coast to coast," said the New York Times, "they know where to find the freshest lobster rolls, the fluffiest pancakes, the crispiest catfish."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Olsen knows it's time to leave her sister's increasingly crowded house and start a life of her own. Following her sisters' examples, she becomes a mail-order bride, and after a short correspondence with clock maker and jeweler Edward Parker, she moves to Denver to become his wife. Almost immediately it's painfully apparent that Anna and Edward are very different. Anna is a free spirit who would rather be painting and enjoying the company of friends than cleaning house. Edward is a consummate perfectionist who, on their wedding day, hands Anna a list of chores that need to be done around the house daily. Can this mismatched couple see past their differences to a harmonious future? Or will their disparate passions create obstacles neither is willing to surmount? Maggie Brendan closes her Blue Willow Brides series with a heartwarming tale of true love despite misunderstanding, showing readers that God's timing is always perfect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Material Culture of Tableware is a fascinating and authoritative study of patterned tableware in the US. The book undertakes a visual analysis of Johnson Brothers patterns of tableware pottery, with reference to comparable designs by other British companies, such as Spode and Adams. It examines how this practical genre reflected the aesthetic values, sense of identity and aspirations of the American consumers who purchased its products. The study also sheds light on British opinions and understandings of American culture. The book's chronological organization shows how tableware designs reflected the cultural developments of American society during the long 20th century. From status-seeking 1890s beaux-arts patterns and the nostalgic historical scenes of the 1930s, to whimsical 1960s patterns and the contemporary motifs of the 1970s, The Material Culture of Tableware tells a compelling story about who 20th century middle-class Americans were and wanted to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Lanford Wilson became a Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright, with such celebrated productions as The Hot l Baltimore, Fifth of July, Talley’s Folly, and Burn This, he wrote dozens of short stories and poems, many of which take place in the 1950s, small-town Missouri where he grew up. This selection of Wilson’s early work, written between 1955 and 1967 when he was between the ages of 18 and 30, provides a rare look at a young writer developing his style. The stories explore many of the themes Wilson later took up in the theater, such as sexual identity and the rupture of societies and families. These never-before-published works—part of the manuscript collection donated by Wilson to the University of Missouri—shed light on the roots of some of America’s best-loved plays and are accomplished and evocative works in their own right.

Book excerpt: Tea lovers will want to curl up - a pot of their favorite variety at hand - and linger over every informative page of this comprehensive account of tea's history and qualities. Chow and Kramer focus on Chinese teas and tea practices; their wonderfully detailed discussions leave no stone unturned in bringing to light all facets of tea as a plant, drink and institution. Two particularly interesting chapters center on tea's health benefits (which seem to be wide ranging and consequential) and how to make a good cup of tea (no easy task, to which any tea drinker can attest).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Passion for China is a personal celebration of the everyday beauty of tableware. 'As we move through our daily lives, eating breakfast, sipping an afternoon cup of tea or gathering for a family dinner, the patterned ceramic objects we live with are precious witnesses to our stories. We eat from them, they warm our hands after a cold walk outdoors and we pull them out to celebrate the births, marriages and lives of our loved ones.' Acclaimed ceramicist, artist and designer Molly Hatch explores the family stories behind beloved items - the bowls and cups we have inherited or chosen with love and care - and brings the history of porcelain, potteries and patterns to life through her stunning, hand-drawn illustrations. A tribute to the rich heritage of the vintage plates, jugs and pots that make our homes our own. Please note this is a fixed-format ebook with colour images and may not be well-suited for older e-readers.

This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excavations published in this volume are the first systematic investigation of Ottoman remains in the lower town of Jaffa and the only such volume in Israel dedicated largely to a final excavation report of Ottoman period remains. This is profound, because cultural heritage remains from after 1799 CE have not been previously identified in legal terms as antiquities in the manner in which earlier remains are treated as archaeological. Salvage archaeological work, particularly in an urban environment, still faces many limitations. These excavations, in the former Israeli police compound of Jaffa, complete the archaeological investigation of the northern part of Jaffa's lower town. In addition to the stratigraphy (chs. 2-3), the volume presents ceramic finds of the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods (ch. 4-6), Crusader pottery (ch. 7), porcelain and ceramic vessels of the Ottoman period (ch. 8), coins (ch. 17) and small finds of other materials (ch. 18-25), as well as weapons (chs. 14-16).
