Download or read book From Fancy Pants to Getting There written by Elizabeth Wright and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Wright had it all. A comfortable life, successful business, house, handsome partner and beautiful baby. Then things screwed up. She discovered that the man in her life was being unfaithful, and her prosperous pet centre crashed into a financial black hole. At fifty-two, and menopausal, she was reduced to being a single mum on benefits with the stigma of bankruptcy. Left with just a negative equity house harnessed to a hefty mortgage, she had to face an impoverished lifestyle along with a succession of jobs which either folded or relocated. In this hilarious book she recounts how she quickly learnt to juggle work and child care, keep an ancient car on the road that already had one wheel in the Great Breaker’s Yard in the Sky, whilst her money-saving efforts to grow her own food, were defeated by thieving blackbirds, munching molluscs and exploding bags of donkey manure. Dog sitting was a disaster, with fleas, mangy animals and an amorous owner with a dodgy trouser zip. There were cockroaches in the takeaway, drunks in the bakery, and a parcel sealing machine with pit bull attitude in the factory. Then, after all her efforts, the Trustees of the Bankruptcy stated that her only asset, the house, was back into equity and would have to be sold to pay the debtors. Fighting this, she worked fourteen hours a day, raised the required £30,000, kept the house, had the bankruptcy annulled and, with a great sense of humour, wrote this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensing the Future to Compete in the Present Offers a proven approach for making sense out of future challenges and devising positive responses, using methods developed by the respected Institute for the Future Features examples of how organizations like Procter & Gamble, Disney, Reuters, UPS, and the Centers for Disease Control have put the approach into practice Includes the institute's ten-year forecast of trends, challenges, and opportunitiesThese days, every leader struggles with a paradox: you can't predict the future, but you have to be able to make sense of it to thrive. In the age of the Internet, everyone knows what's new, but to succeed you have to be able to sort out what's important, devise strategies based on your own point of view, and get there ahead of the crowd.Bob Johansen shares techniques the Institute for the Future has been refining for nearly forty years to help leaders navigate what, borrowing a term from the Army War College, he calls the VUCA world: a world characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. As the institute's ten-year forecast makes clear, leaders now face fewer problems with neat solutions and more dilemmas: recurring, complex, messy, and puzzling situations. Get There Early lays out the institute's three-step Foresight to Insight to Action Cycle that will allow readers to sense, make sense of, and win with dilemmas. Johansen offers specific techniques, ranging from storytelling to simulation gaming, as well as real-world examples to help readers turn the VUCA world on its head through creative use of vision, understanding, clarity, and agility. This book offers hope for leaders facing the constant tension - a dilemma in itself - between judging too soon and deciding too late.

Download or read book Africa Should Get There Too written by Alfani Sumaili Yoyo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After having been stunned by untold evils making the order of each day in Africa, and particularly in his country, Alfani was compelled to address this in the form of a book. The ideas he suggests to alleviate the situation is what he regards as alternative strategies to develop a crumbling continent. Alfani believes that development should be given priority. He laments that most of the continent's resources are misused by a handful of citizens and dumped in the most worthless personal luxuries and expenditures such as civil and religious wars. About HIV/AIDS in Africa, he simply but firmly says that no matter how complicated the disease can be, the chance is that it can be reversed if there'll be a systematic paradigm shift in people's minds. From the experience of land reform in Zimbabwe as well as severe hunger caused by extremely low rate of food production in many African states, he scoffs the continent's inability to invest in the land. He also blames contemporary African leaders for their reluctance to embrace the breeze of development, and accuses politicians of treating ordinary citizens cheaply. In this book, he offers a simple definition of the word "development" when he equates it to a walk from where people have been getting delayed to where they would like to be. For Africa, this means joining other continents or even taking an extra mile. On the other hand, he warns his readers not to take his book as a compilation of some absolute "do's" but to consider it as a guide or help. The implementation of his suggestions is absolutely a personal issue. Alfani's book is not only engaging but also informative.
