Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging story about a shy pet store employee who is more comfortable around animals than people takes readers on an action adventure that's as full of heart as it is with surprising twists and breathtaking suspense. Hope Dies Last opens with a male customer yelling in Mekana's face, and her way of handling the confrontation is to go get her coworker to take care of it for her. It's yet another failed social interaction that leaves her feeling like a mouse. The next day, a friend invites Mekana on a trip to Alaska for her uncle's funeral. After all, she says, "You don't want to be trapped in pit of shyness forever, do you?" Encouraged by her more outgoing sister and her gregarious friend to shake things up a little and get out of her comfort zone, Mekana agrees to go on the five-day adventure. After all, there might be moose-or kayaking with orcas! But Mekana's life is shaken up more than a little when her sightseeing plane crash-lands in the Alaskan wilderness. Finding herself entangled in a desperate plot gone awry, will Mekana find the strength to keep herself-and the others-alive?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has worked to answer all your questions about travel and recreation in a state so remote. This guide attempts to target your interests and save you time, money, and effort so that nothing is wasted during your trip. Because Alaska is so big and your options so varied, the guide is organized so you can zero in on the activity or activities that appeal to you most. Thirteen chapters focus solely on adventure travel, each devoted to a single activity. The five regional chapters that follow focus primarily on the basics in a given area of the state: getting around, shopping, lodging, dining, and entertainment. Once you've chosen the adventure of your dreams, you can go to the appropriate regional chapter to get the scoop on the best places in the vicinity to stay, eat, buy gear, rent a car, and learn about local culture and history. Outdoor travelers also are likely independent travelers. A multitude of companies offer exciting-sounding jaunts to scenic places all over the state, but many of these outfits work only with tour providers, such as cruise-ship operators, to obtain large numbers of clients per trip--thus excluding people who wish to travel on their own. In this guide, all our listings are available to independent travelers as well as those in tour groups. The objective is not to provide the most information about destinations or attractions, but, rather, the most useful information. The guide is opinionated, and for good reason. Any destination or outfitter listed here has made the cut by proving itself a wonderful place to visit or a reliable company with which to do business. If, for example, you want to learn more about sea kayaking in Alaska, you will not be supplied with every operation in the business--and believe us, there are many of them competing for your dollars. What you will get is a select assortment of those we consider best, and why. After all, isn't the point of a guidebook to help you make the most informed choices?

Book excerpt: Alaska Adventure is not only a story of survival in a harsh frozen land but of faith in one's ability to overcome fear and isolation for a prolonged period of time. Wayne made plans as he went along, not considering anyone except himself. This approach to adventures went well with him-most of the time. Alaska was a far cry from the lower 48's and an environment out of his league. On top of everything else, being responsible for a young eight-year-old Haden was a situation in which he certainly did not have any expertise. Being in the military had taught Wayne how to approach problems quickly, so when the crash happened and he and Haden were left in the frozen wilderness of Alaska for so long, those problems were addressed, and they possibly got help from an unseen identity. There cannot be any other answer-something else was out there with them.

Book excerpt: The disappearance of a Reno couple from Prince William Sound, Alaska, along with a half eaten dog, apparently by killer whales, raises suspicion that a certain orca pack, called the A-T pack, led by a particularly sharp and aggressive female, the queen, may be responsible. An exploration geologist and his wife, Alaska residents and both interested in orcas, carry out investigations in the A-T pack's home waters to learn more about their behavior and habits. They are joined by a marine biologist orca specialist from southern California. A number of people are determined to communicate with the orcas, including a psychologist from Canada, a rock band from Vancouver, BC. and music for the orcas via underwater speakers. Some kids from Anchorage attempt to communicate with the whales with near-fatal consequences. Accompany the intelligent orcas as they hunt, kill and eat various types of fish and animals. They also have fun. The three investigators decide to test the interest of the orcas, under federal and state supervision, in a totally strange food to help determine if they might kill and eat humans. Small pigs, a human food, were decided upon as the best choice for testing orca reaction to strange food animals. The test is successful and part of the A-T pack is orca led but not for long.

This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively narrative with its numerous illustrations and photographs, Steven C. Levi captures the color and the riches of the Alaska Gold Rush and tells the stories of the larger-than-life characters who lived the adventure. The Alaska Gold Rush at the end of the 19th century was the last great fit of gold fever in North America. Men and women—including African Americans, Portuguese, Japanese, Italians, and Chinese—all rushed north. Many of these adventurers died in the harsh Arctic winters or drowned in the leaky, rotting ships that ferried them to the gold fields. The Gold Rush created the geography of modern Alaska and brought its rich natural resources and large Native population under the eye of the American government. This book, says Levi, is not intended to be an overview of the Alaska Gold Rush. Rather, it is meant to provide a myriad of glimpses into the lives of people and events of the age. This is a book of popular history. If you find it interesting, don't thank the writer; credit the 100,000 men and women who rushed north in search of the precious yellow metal a century ago. Far to the north of the 48 contiguous states, writes Steven C. Levi, is a land shrouded with the miasma of adventure. It is a land of glaciers the size of some states and fish the size of some cities. Its history is steeped in intrigue, scoundrels abound, and things that could never occur anywhere else on earth happened here. It has everything one has come to expect of an exotic port-and more. This land is Alaska. The Alaska Gold Rush at the end of the 19th century was the last great fit of gold fever in North America. It promised untold riches to anyone who could get there, and created a last-ditch, wild-west culture of greed and sin—a perfect haven for dreamers and scoundrels alike. Men and women—including African Americans, Portuguese, Japanese, Italians, and Chinese—all rushed north. Many of these adventurers died in the harsh Arctic winters or drowned in the leaky, rotting ships that ferried the dreamers to the gold fields. The Gold Rush created the geography of modern Alaska. Strikes in Nome (where the gold lay on the beach and anyone could reach down and pick it up), Juneau, Fairbanks, Valdez, and Kotzebue helped put Alaska on the map and brought its rich natural resources and large Native population under the eye of the American government. In this lively narrative with its numerous illustrations and photographs, Steven C. Levi captures the color and the riches of the Alaska Gold Rush and tells the stories of the larger-than-life characters who lived the adventure. E. T. Barnette, for example, founded his own city (Fairbanks), established his own bank (Washington Alaska), and then absconded with every dime in the vault. George Hinton Henry, the father of Alaska journalism, was run out of every town where he tried to establish a newspaper.

Download or read book Alaskan Bush Adventures written by Don Ernst and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a vast expanse of wilderness that lies within the borders of the United States—a land where there are no roads, no malls and no power lines stretching across the horizon. Instead, nature is on display in all of its glory. With forests, meadows, river basins, lakes, and mountains—the variety is as diverse as the expanse of the land itself. This is Alaska, the Great Land. Within these wild stretches of Alaska lie small, scattered, remote villages which are home to various ethnic groups of Alaskan natives. In the spring of 1990, Don Ernst and his wife moved to one of these isolated villages to begin a church planting ministry. During the next 27 years, life and ministry were within the realm of this setting. There were lessons learned from the elders and from the land. During this time of ministry there were also lessons learned from the Lord. The author shares these times of life lessons and spiritual growth in the tradition of the culture: stories. These stories of life and ministry share the tragedies and the triumphs sprinkled with grief and laughter. The author uses stories to instruct, encourage, and challenge you as he unfolds them in the real life setting of the Alaskan bush.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oh No! We’re Gonna Die is a compilation of short stories about close calls in Alaska involving the author and his friends and family. These stories are written in a humorous fashion, but still convey the apprehension, excitement and relief involved in life-threatening adventures. It shows how a relatively small mistake can become a major problem in the remote Alaska bush. It takes the reader on adventures throughout the state with a unique cast of characters who never seem to lack in questionable judgment or bad luck. You will encounter airplane crashes, bears of every size and shape, extreme weather, vicious fish, malfunctioning boats and a host of other challenges. These stories will give you an insight into how rugged, and how fun, life on the last frontier can be for some people. The theme of the book is that Alaska has lots of tools to kill you with, and she used most of them on the author and his friends. They survived, mostly by luck, certainly not by wit. Keep in mind as you read this book that these are true stories involving real people, many of whom are still around and in good health. I hope you enjoy sharing our adventures.
