Download or read book I Found You written by Lisa Jewell and published by Pocket Books. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “good old-fashioned novel of psychological suspense, the kind that keeps you reading deep into the night” (The Globe and Mail) about a young bride, a lonely single mother, and a man who has lost his memory cross paths on a desolate and windswept English beach from the New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone. In the seaside town of Ridinghouse Bay, single mom Alice Lake discovers a man sitting on the beach outside her house. He has no name, no jacket, and no idea how he got there. Against her better judgment, she invites him inside. Meanwhile, in a London suburb, newlywed Lily Monrose grows anxious when her husband fails to return home from work one night. Soon, she receives even worse and more confounding news: according to the police, the man she married never even existed. Twenty-three years earlier, Gray and Kirsty Ross are teenagers on a summer holiday with their parents. The annual trip to Ridinghouse Bay is uneventful, until an enigmatic young man starts paying extra attention to Kirsty. Something about him makes Gray uncomfortable—and it’s not just because he’s a protective older brother. What is the relationship between these three events? Who is the man on the beach? Where is Lily’s missing husband? And what ever happened to the man who made such a lasting and disturbing impression on Gray? A delicious collision course of a novel, filled with the believable characters, stunning writing, and shocking twists and turns, I Found You is “infused with just enough intrigue to keep the pages turning. Readers of Liane Moriarty, Paula Hawkins, and Ruth Ware will love” (Library Journal, starred review).

Download or read book Colloquies written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 1320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus' Familiar Colloquies grew from a small collection of phrases, sentences, and snatches of dialogue written in Paris about 1497 to help his private pupils improve their command of Latin. Twenty years later the material was published by Johann Froben (Basel 1518). It was an immediate success and was reprinted thirty times in the next four years. For the edition of March 1522 Erasmus began to add fully developed dialogues, and a book designed to improve boys' use of Latin (and their deportment) soon became a work of literature for adults, although it retained traces of its original purposes. The final Froben edition (March, 1533) had about sixty parts, most of them dialogues. It was in the last form that the Colloquies were read and enjoyed for four centuries. For modern readers it is one of the best introductions to European society of the Renaissance and Reformation periods, with lively descriptions of daily life and provocative discussions of political, religious, social, and literary topics, presented with Erasmus's characteristic wit and verve. Each colloquy has its own introduction and full explanatory, historical, and biographical notes. Volumes 39 and 40 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series - Two-volume set.

Download or read book Story written by Harold Scheub and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the essence of story? How does the storyteller convey meaning? Leading scholar Harold Scheub tackles these questions and more, demonstrating that the power of story lies in emotion. While others have focused on the importance of structure in the art of story, Scheub emphasizes emotion. He shows how an expert storyteller uses structural elements—image, rhythm, and narrative—to shape a story's fundamental emotional content. The storyteller uses traditional images, repetition, and linear narrative to move the audience past the story’s surface of morals and ideas, and make connections to their past, present, and future. To guide the audience on this emotional journey is the storyteller’s art. The traditional stories from South African, Xhosa, and San cultures included in the book lend persuasive support to Scheub’s. These stories speak for themselves, demonstrating that a skilled performer can stir emotions despite the obstacles of space, time, and culture.
Download or read book Tasos Leivaditis Triptych written by and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected here are the three poetry books with which one of Greece’s finest writers, Tasos Leivaditis, made his literary debut in 1952-53. Greece was at this time emerging out of the devastating destruction of World War II and the subsequent civil war (1946-49). Leivaditis, on the side of the defeated leftists in the civil conflict, paid for his political affiliation by being exiled to concentration camps on various islands for more than three years. Upon his release in 1951, he was to publish in quick succession three remarkable volumes of poetry which draw upon his experiences of violence and persecution, but which are framed by a broader commitment to justice and freedom, love and peace. The three books were immediate successes, and continue to be widely read and discussed in Greece today. Now, for the first time, they are made available to an English-reading audience, who are sure to find in the depth and intensity of Leivaditis’ verses a compelling witness not only to past terrors and tragedies but also to the irrepressible desire to vindicate life and love, because “this star is for all of us.”
