Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I Was a Rat!” So insists a scruffy boy named Roger. Maybe it’s true. But what is he now? A terrifying monster running wild in the sewers? The Daily Scourge is sure of it. A victim of “Rodent Delusion”? The hospital nurse says yes. A lucrative fairground freak? He is to Mr. Tapscrew. A champion wriggler and a budding thief? That’s what Billy thinks. Or just an ordinary small boy, though a little ratty in his habits? Only three people believe this version of the story. And it may take a royal intervention—and a bit of magic—to convince the rest of the world. Set against the backdrop of a Royal Wedding—and a playful parody of the press, I Was a Rat! is a magical weaving of humor, fairy tale, and adventure.

Book excerpt: ÒThe Greatest War Story of All Ð Takes rank with All Quiet on the Western Front. She fulfilled in every respect the conditions which made the terrible profession of a spy dignified and honourable. Dwelling behind the German line within sound of cannon, she continually obtained and sent information of the highest importance to the British Intelligence Authorities. Her tale is a thrilling one É the main description of her life and intrigues and adventures is undoubtedly authentic. I was unable to stop reading it until 4 a.m.Ó Winston Churchill 1932 With her medical studies cut short by the 1914 German invasion, her house burned down and her father arrested for suspected ÔsharpshootingÕ, it was perhaps unsurprising that the multi-lingual Marthe Mckenna (nŽe Cnockaert, codename ÔLauraÕ) was recruited by British Intelligence. At the time she worked as a nurse tending the wounds of occupying soldiers, and as a waitress in her parentsÕ cafŽ in the Belgian border town of Roulers. I Was a Spy! is McKennaÕs vivid narrative of these breathtaking adventures as she, aided by a gallant band of loyal locals, goes undercover to sabotage enemy phone lines, report suspicious activity or train movements, and even instigate an aerial attack on a planned visit by the Kaiser. This thrilling account goes on to explain how, in 1916, the young nurse was caught by the Germans placing dynamite in a disused sewer tunnel underneath an ammunition dump. She was sentenced to the firing squad and only survived due to the Iron Cross honor received as a result of her earlier medical service . Mckenna was later mentioned by Douglas Haig in British Despatches and was awarded the French and Belgian Orders of the Legion of Honour for her espionage work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are so many theatre productions adaptations of one kind or another? Why do contemporary practitioners turn so frequently to non-dramatic texts for inspiration? This study explores the fascination of novels, short stories, children's books and autobiographies for theatre makers and examines what 'becomes' of literary texts when these are filtered into contemporary practice that includes physical theatre, multimedia performance, puppetry, immersive and site-specific performance and live art. In Adaptation in Contemporary Theatre, Frances Babbage offers a series of fresh critical perspectives on the theory of adaptation in theatre-making, focusing on meditations of prose literature within contemporary performance. Individual chapters explore the significance and impact of books as physical objects within productions; the relationship between the dramatic adaptation and literary edition; storytelling on the page and in performance; literary space and theatrical space; and prose fiction reframed as 'found text' in contemporary theatre and live art. Case studies are drawn from internationally acclaimed companies including Complicite, Elevator Repair Service, Kneehigh, Forced Entertainment, Gob Squad, Teatro Kismet and Stan's Cafe. Adaptation in Contemporary Theatre is a compelling and provocative resource for anyone interested in the potential and the challenges of using prose literature as material for new theatrical performance.

There are deep things you deal with daily, but when you have experienced God in such miraculous ways, they become little testimonies that shape your whole life. Because we live faith to faith. You are willing to show the light to reveal the darkness, no matter what the cost. We need to nail it to the cross to run this race. His ways are not our ways. Sometimes, that can make it so frustrating, but we can still stand strong and rise up, knowing we are triumphant with our head held high, humbly of course. My sins are forgiven. That is a reminder to Satan my debt has been paid. He is the only way and He is going to perform His good word toward us. He loves us, and where you see ugly, He sees beautiful!

Book excerpt: I was almost as hard headed as it gets while repeatedly insisting on missing and ignoring the entire point that Mom and a few others tried to get me to realize. "GET YOUR EDUCATION!!!" I still had some great times here and there every now and then, and I can only imagine how beautiful-my-life-would-have-been if I would have followed the "The Golden Rules." Some wonderful things have happened to me even though I still feel that I truly did not deserve or even know how to sincerely enjoy thoroughly, but on the other hand, some not so wonderful things have happened to me that I basically brought on myself as a direct result of not following "The Golden Rules." EDUCATION IS A MUST!!! I know my family was not the only family that has gone through a divorce, and I know there are millions of kids who went through divorce without a scratch. I am not blaming any of my failures as a man on the pitfalls of divorce, but I can clearly see now that my "character flaws" were a direct hit stemming from the casualties of my parents divorce. I did not ask to be me, and I certainly did not ask or expect to be stuck on stupid for almost three tenths of a century. It was what it was! If I would have known their divorce would eventually effect me which I believe set the wheels in motion that turned towards me turning out the way I have, I would have started Praying that night. But I had no idea it would, and neither did they. I can only imagine how beautiful my life would have been if their marriage was meant to be, but it was not about me. Brooke!

Book excerpt: The canyon country of southeastern Utah is a land of dramatic contrast, with high mountains, tortuous canyons, towering monuments, hot deserts, and freezing alpine temperatures. Raising and herding cattle in this environment is more than challenging. At times, it is death-defying. Fin Bayles, a fourth-generation cattleman, learned well what it took to raise livestock in this forbidding terrain. Much was required of people who would prosper in a stingy land. In Cowboying in Canyon Country, with captivating wit and humor shared through prose, oral history, and poetry, Fin provides a window into the daily challenges facing such people. His life in the rural Four Corners region was filled with trials and adventure—a kaleidoscope of colorful personalities plying their trades; raising horses, mules, and hinnies; and caring for cattle and cowboys on the range. Saddle up with Fin for an unforgettable ride through yesteryear!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin MacFarlane was born in the Gorbals in the 1950s, 20 years after the publication of No Mean City, the classic novel about pre-war life in what was once Glasgow's most deprived district. He lived in the same street as its fictional 'razor king', Johnnie Stark, and subsequently realised that a lot of the old characters represented in the book were still around as late as the 1960s. Men still wore bunnets and played pitch and toss; women still treated the steamie as their social club. The razor gangs were running amok once again, and filth, violence, crime, rats, poverty and drunkenness abounded, just like they did in No Mean City. MacFarlane witnessed the last days of the old Gorbals as a major regeneration programme, begun in 1961, was implemented, and, as a street boy, he had a unique insight into a once great community in rapid decline. In this engrossing book, MacFarlane reveals what it was really like to live in the old Gorbals.
