Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often treated like night itself—both visible and invisible, feared and romanticized—Latina/os make up the largest minority group in the US. In her newest work, María DeGuzmán explores representations of night in art and literature from the Caribbean, Colombia, Central and South America, and the US, calling into question night's effect on the formation of identity for Latina/os in and outside of the US. She takes as her subject novels, short stories, poetry, essays, non-fiction, photo-fictions, photography, and film, and examines these texts through the lenses of nationhood, sexuality, human rights, exoticism, among others.
Download or read book Florence Nightingale on Wars and the War Office written by Lynn McDonald and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 1056 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 15 of the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Wars and the War Office, picks up on the previous volume’s recounting of Nightingale’s famous work during the Crimean War and the comprehensive analysis she did on its high death rates. This volume moves on to the implementation of the recommendations that emerged from that research and to her work to reduce deaths in the next wars, beginning with the American Civil War. Nightingale’s writings describe the creation of the Army Medical School, the vast improvements made in the statistical tracking of disease, and new measures for soldiers’ welfare. Her role in the formulation of the first Geneva Convention in 1864 is related, along with her concern that voluntary relief efforts through the Red Cross not make war “cheap.” Nightingale was decorated by both sides for her work in the Franco-Prussian War. While much of her work concerned the mundane sending out of supplies, we see also in her writing her emerging interest in militarism as the cause of war. Her opposition to the Afghan War (of her time) and her work to provide nursing for the Egyptian campaigns, the Zulu War, and the start of the Boer War are also included.

Download or read book Writing and Filming the Painting written by Laura M. Sager Eidt and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative interdisciplinary study compares the uses of painting in literary texts and films. In developing a framework of four types of ekphrasis, the author argues for the expansion of the concept of ekphrasis by demonstrating its applicability as interpretive tool to films about the visual arts and artists. Analyzing selected works of art by Goya, Rembrandt, and Vermeer and their ekphrastic treatment in various texts and films, this book examines how the medium of ekphrasis affects the representation of the visual arts in order to show what the differences imply about issues such as gender roles and the function of art for the construction of a personal or social identity. Because of its highly cross-disciplinary nature, this book is of interest not only to scholars of literature and aesthetics, but also for scholars of film studies. By providing an innovative approach to discussing non-documentary films about artists, the author shows that ekphrasis is a useful tool for exploring both aesthetic concerns and ideological issues in film. This study also addresses art historians as it deals with the reception of major artists in European literature and film throughout the 20th century.
Download or read book The Unexpected Adventures of Martin Freeman written by Neil Daniels and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MARTIN FREEMAN is one of Britain's best-loved actors. After being cast in bit parts and cameos - such as The Bill (his first onscreen role) and the beat-boxing Ricky C in Ali G Indahouse - he made his big break as Tim Canterbury in The Office.Freeman was later cast, among other roles, as the mundane character of Arthur Dent in the sci-fi movie adaption of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and, labelled an 'everyday' bloke by journalists, began to run the risk of being stereotyped. However, in 2010 he completely turned his career around when he took on the role of Dr John Watson in the incredibly successful Sherlock. His biggest role followed as he portrayed Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy and, in recent years, Freeman has shown a dark edge to his thespian skills by portraying Richard III in the West End and Lester Nygaard in the critically acclaimed US drama series Fargo. An intensely private man, Freeman is in a long-term relationship with the actress Amanda Abbington, whom he met on the set of the 2000 Channel 4 TV movie Men Only and who played his onscreen partner in Sherlock. The Unexpected Adventures of Martin Freeman explores the rise to fame of this unassuming actor, how he has successfully managed to avoid the pitfalls of stardom, and how he has become one of the greatest actors of his generation. It is a must-read for any fan.

This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After the completion of my fortieth book I decided to hang my pen but destiny decided otherwise. Many of my readers wrote to me, as also asked me personally to write only those Symptoms of drugs, mostly useful for practice in day to day. As an old timer and believer of a complete picture of drugs, I expressed my dissatisfaction of an incomplete picture of drugs. But I expressed my dissatisfaction in doing it but ultimately I bowed down to their wishes remembering the advice of my mentor and guru late Dr M N Jaisoorya, MD that the first and foremost duty of each and every homeopath is to do all things which help for the spread of this Divine medical science. If this book helps to do so, I feel I have done something to fulfil the desire of that great man, who forsake his highest allopathic medical degree from Germany and converted himself to this system of medicine which he thought is more suited to a developing country like ours. I pray to God that this book will receive the same patronage from the fraternity of Homoeopaths as before." -- Dr P Rajagopalarao
