This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the majority of libraries in the state of Kentucky did not offer services to African Americans between the years 1860 and 1960, public libraries did employ them. The Louisville Public Library, a leader in the development of library management and education from 1905 to 1925, began in 1912 offering classes to train African American women to be librarians in segregated public library branches that were opening in the South. In 1925, an academic library program was developed for African Americans at the Hampton Institute in Virginia to continue the work that began in Kentucky. This movement culminated with Helen F. Frye's becoming the first African-American to graduate with a master of science degree in library science from the University of Kentucky Library School in 1963. This work moves from the provision by Berea College of the first library services to a fully integrated student body in 1866 through the integration of the state's only accredited library science program at the University of Kentucky in 1949 to the civil rights initiatives of the 1960s. Also addressed are the interconnectedness of libraries and societal events and how one affected the other.

Download or read book Historical Perspectives in the Conservation of Works of Art on Paper written by Margaret Holben Ellis and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the seventh in the Readings in Conservation series, which gathers and publishes texts that have been influential in the development of thinking about the conservation of cultural heritage. The present volume provides a selection of more than ninety-five texts tracing the development of the conservation of works of art on paper. Comprehensive and thorough, the book relates how paper conservation has responded to the changing place of prints and drawings in society. The readings include a remarkable range of historical selections from texts such as Renaissance printmaker Ugo da Carpi’s sixteenth-century petition to the Venetian senate on his invention of chiaroscuro, Thomas Churchyard’s 1588 essay in verse “A Sparke of Frendship and Warme Goodwill,” and Robert Bell’s 1773 piece “Observations Relative to the Manufacture of Paper and Printed Books in the Province of Pennsylvania.” These are complemented by influential writings by such figures as A. H. Munsell, Walter Benjamin, and Jacques Derrida, along with a generous representation of recent scholarship. Each reading is introduced by short remarks explaining the rationale for its selection and the principal matters covered, and the book is supplemented with a helpful bibliography. This volume is an indispensable tool for museum curators, conservators, and students and teachers of the conservation of works of art on paper.
Download or read book Reclaiming the American Library Past written by Suzanne Hildenbrand and published by Greenwood Publishing Group. This book was released on 1996 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This solid anthology makes a fine start at the effort in its title, ^IReclaiming the American Library Past: Writing the Women In^R. Like most good beginnings, it succeeds first by clarifying the status of the field and then by raising questions for subsequent scholars to ponder and pursue. -^IHistory of Education Quarterly ^RThe essays in this book contribute along several dimensions to the new scholarship on a profession and public service of vital importance for well over a century to American literacy, culture and invention. Their authors add to the individual and collective biographies of women who have founded and administered diverse institutions and taught succeeding generations of librarians. The worksites of influential women such as Anne Carroll Moore, Josephine Rathbone, and Grace Hebard, like the nameless paid and volunteer staff who have served as unrecognized catalogers and children's librarians, have varied. They range from the pioneering libraries and library schools of the settled East- including Brooklyn and the Harlem, Times Square, and Morningside Heights neighborhoods of Manhattan- the historically Black Howard University to the numberless small towns of the West. They include the raw A&M colleges of Arkansas, Utah, New Mexico, and similarly neglected centers of local and regional enlightenment.
