Book excerpt: Stereologic techniques begin to play an increasing role in biologic morphology, particularly there where correlation of structure and function on a quantitative basis is sought. These powerful methods have been in use for many years - partly even for many decades - in geology, mineralogy and metallurgy, while attempts to introduce them into histology have remained rather rare until a few years ago. In order to stimulate discussion among anatomists about stereo logic methods the International Society for Stereology, an interdisciplinary society, organized a Sym posium on Quantitative Methods in Morphology which took place on August 10, 1965 in the framework of the Eighth International Congress of Anatomists in Wiesbaden, Germany. The papers presented at this symposium are published in this volume in slightly extended form. Some of the papers of this volume are of rather specialized nature and presume a basic knowledge of stereology. The first chapter on general stereological principles has therefore been considerably extended and short introductory review paragraphs have been added to a few subsequent chapters to help those who are not yet familiar with this new field in understanding the more specialized original articles. Long discussion periods formed an essential part of the symposium. However, they were conducted very informally and hence it would not have been profitable to reproduce them in extenso, particularly since the major results of discussion have been incorporated by the authors into the expanded manuscripts presented here.

In the meantime, about 10,000 crop circles have appeared in more than 50 countries. However, well over half of them come from southern England in the area of Stonehenge, Woodhenge, Silbury Hill, White Horse and other prehistoric monuments. Some of them can be proved to have been made by humans, but others just as certainly have not been made by humans - this is not the starting situation one would wish for as a researcher ... In the present book 300 of these crop circles are examined more closely. It turns out that they contain approx. 100 elements which appear in many crop circles. Their geometrical form has an easily recognizable meaning. Therefore, with the help of these "words", the crop circles composed of them can be read like "sentences". The meaning is almost always the same: a representation of how individuality unfolds. Therefore, there are many similarities with astrology or the chakra system, for example. This analytical approach is complemented by 50 dream journeys into individual crop circles, which makes the picture that arises from the analytical observation of the crop circles even more rounded. Thereby a first impression can be gained of the language of the collective subconsciousness - which words and which grammar it uses: It is a "music of geometry".

The first was a reading of Emile Meyerson works in the course of a prolonged research on Einstein's relativity theory, which sent me back to Meyerson's Ident ity and Reality, where I read and reread the striking chapter on "Ir rationality". Concentrating on the writer's two basic motivations for writing as he did in these stories, Dillingham argues that Melville created a surface of almost inane congeniality in many of the works, an illusion of vapidity that camouflages a profundity often missed by his readers. He sought to to hide disturbing themes because the magazines for which he was writing would almost certainly have rejected his attempts to be more direct. Dillingham's method is not, however, confined to a reading of the texts. Melville's stories contain so many allusions to the contemporary scene that they constitute in themselves a cultural study. An important contribution of Melville's Short Fiction is its discussion of these allusions. Finally, Dillingham examines the relationship between the short fiction and Melville's own life. Much of the writer's frustration and struggle is concealed in these early works.
