Book excerpt: "The Bestselling Hardcover Novel of the Year."--Publishers Weekly From the number-one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes a powerful American epic about love and heroism and hope, set during the Great Depression, a time when the country was in crisis and at war with itself, when millions were out of work and even the land seemed to have turned against them. “My land tells its story if you listen. The story of our family.” Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail and water dries up and the earth cracks open. Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive. In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family. The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it—the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

It all begins when Ennoia gets run off the Florida Interstate while trying to get to work. Immediately after her near fatal accident, she has dreams that become a living nightmare. A dark and ancient entity is determined to find her and kill her, before Ennoia can discover who and what she really is. Ennoia moves to Boston, where she meets Emily Moore, an eccentric old professor. The elderly lady has a secret, one that will bring Ennoia closer to the 6,000-year-old legend known as the Legend of the Four Winds. The secret foretells the coming destruction of the world About the Author: A.L. Morton has been weaving fantastical tales her whole life. Originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, she now lives in St. Augustine, Florida. The story began as a dream. She drew a Celtic symbol that was a large part of her dream. I was a part of a medieval ceremony that took place thousands of years ago. This ceremony was held high upon a hill that held four sets of giant stones, much like Stonehenge.Four women stood in between their perspective stone gateways. Several months later, I received an unexpected gift, a necklace. It carried the same exact symbol as the one from my dream. I became inspired and plunged myself into some serious research, only to find that this ceremony had been real and that the symbol that was on my necklace had indeed been a real Celtic religion called the Four Winds. Book excerpt: “If a person commits a crime against another people, and they are someday sorrowful of this crime, they will ask forgiveness from the person; we may or may not be forgiven; if we are not forgiven, either way we need to let it go. They will forgive you in their time, when it is right for them, that is the Creator’s job, not yours. In asking forgiveness from the Creator, you need to let it go. The Creator immediately will forgive us once we ask it of Him. It is our human nature to think, sometimes our crimes are too horrific in nature. The human in us tells us Creator can’t forgive those; it is the human in us that makes us think, it is the human in us we need to turn off. Only then is when we listen to our heart. The Creator does not have a court with a judge, jury or prosecutor; there is only One, Him. He does not have a scale or measure to determine or compare one crime to another, to Him a crime is a crime, if the crime is being an adulterer, a liar, or a murderer, to Him they are all the same, the punishment is the same. What matters is not the crime, but that you were spiritual enough to ask forgiveness from our Creator. Don’t let the human in you think you cannot be forgiven, that is Satan influencing you, Satan will want you to think you are no good and can’t possibly be forgiven. DO NOT listen to that one. Let your heart, your spirit take over with the understanding it is done. The Creator wants you to know you do not repeatedly need to be forgiven for the same crime. You have been forgiven, so you are to go on as He intended. He created us to be happy, so that is what you will do. And you are to be sure you forgive others for their crimes against you. That is just how it works.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chapter-by-chapter high-quality summary of Kristin Hannah´s book The Four Winds, including chapter details and an analysis of the main themes of the original book. About the original book: The year is 1921 in Texas. It's a season of plenty. The Great War is over, the land's wealth is abundant, and America is on the verge of a new and hopeful period. But the future appears gloomy for Elsa Wolcott, who is judged too old to marry at a period when marriage is a woman's only option. Until she meets Rafe Martinelli one night and chooses to change her life's path. With her reputation in shambles, she has no choice but to marry a guy she hardly knows. By 1934, the world had changed; millions of people were out of work, and the Great Plains had been decimated by drought. As crops fail, water runs out, and the soil breaks up, farmers are struggling to maintain their land and livelihoods. Dust storms rage over the plains incessantly. Every day is a terrible battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive on the Martinelli farm, including Elsa's shaky marriage. In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa, like so many of her neighbors, must choose between fighting for the place she loves and leaving it behind to seek a better life for her family in California.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich in period analysis, here is fascinating historical perspective covering 250 years of existence primarily of a 1750 Spanish settlement originally called Villa del Seor San Ignacio de Loyola de Revilla and now known as "Guerrero Viejo." Although many books cover the genealogical aspects of families that originated in this city, the historical contributions of the early pioneers, their descendents, and the controversy related to land grants, called Porciones -- awarded by the King of Spain -- have, for the most part, remained in the background. This, then, is the principal objective of this book. The book provides summaries on the evolution, history, wars, and problems of Mexico. Using some of his ancestors as a sample, the author shows the hardships they endured and discusses their contribution in the formation of the two great nations that the United States and Mexico have become. At the same time, the book shows that the land grants (and heirs) took one of two alternate roads -- depending on their location -- when Texas and other territories were ceded to the United States. People and land grants located on the Mexican side were victims of the violent and blood soaked history that Mexico has had. On the other hand, those located on the U.S. side, were subjected to mischief and flagrant violations of the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Sadly, in 1953, the Falcon Dam inundated Guerrero Viejo and many of the land grants. Thus, for all intents and purposes, the heirs of most land grants met the same end and a financial obligation (of $193.0 Million plus interest) exchanged between the U.S. and Mexico has remained unpaid for over 80 years. The reader will long-remember the amazing facts developed in this book.
