Download or read book Midwinter Rites of the Cayuga Long House written by Frank Gouldsmith Speck and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his last years ethnohistorian Frank G. Speck turned to the study of Iroquois ceremonialism. This 1950 book investigates the religious rites of the Cayuga tribe, one of six in the Iroquois confederation that occupied upstate New York until the American Revolution. In the 1930s and the 1940s Frank Speck observed the Midwinter Ceremony, the Cayuga thanksgiving for the blessings of life and health, performed in long houses on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario. Collaborating with Alexander General (Deskáheh), the noted Cayuga chief, Speck describes vividly the rites and dances giving thanks to all spiritual entities. Of special interest are the medicine societies that not only prescribed herbs but used powerfully evocative masks in treating the underlying causes of sickness. In a new introduction, William N. Fenton discusses Speck’s distinguished career.

Book excerpt: The coffin published in this book represents a type that had some popularity in southern Upper Egypt in the early Middle Kingdom, but which, despite its extraordinary decoration had not attracted attention so far. The most striking feature of the decoration is that the object friezes - the pictorial rendering of ritual implements usually found on coffin interiors of the period - also include complete ritual scenes, some of which are attested only here. Apart from this, the decoration includes an extensive selection of the religious texts know as the Coffin Texts. The author first studies the archaeological context and dating of the coffin and attempts a reconstruction of the construction procedures from his technical description of the monument. The detailed account of the decoration in the rest of the book interprets the ritual iconography and offers fresh translations and interpretations of the Coffin Texts. A methodological innovation is that he regards the scenes and texts not as individual decoration elements, but as components of an integral composition. The background of this composition is argued to be a view of life in the hereafter in which the deceased is involved in an unending cycle of ritual action which reflects the funerary rituals that were actually performed on earth. On the one hand, these netherworldly rituals aim at bringing the deceased to new life by mummification, on the other the newly regenerated deceased partakes in embalming rituals for gods representing his dead father (Osiris or Atum). These gods, in their turn, effectuate the deceased's regeneration. The entire process results in a cycle of resuscitation in which the afterlife of the deceased and of the 'father gods' are interdependent. The sociological bias of this interpretation, with its emphasis on kinship relations, differs significantly from earlier attempts to explain Egyptian funerary religion.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Dickson McCunn – The Complete Adventure Series in One Volume” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The hero of the adventure trilogy is an affluent grocer Dickson McCunn, who has sold his business and taken early retirement. As soon as he ventures out to explore the world, he is swept out of his bourgeois rut into bizarre and outlandish adventures, and forced to become a reluctant hero. He is formidable and dangerous partly because he seems unremarkable and ordinary, and friends and enemies alike are taken by surprise when he acts boldly. Content: Huntingtower: The story revolves around the imprisonment under false pretenses by Bolshevik agents of an exiled Russian noblewoman. The Scottish local community mobilises to uncover and thwart the conspiracy against her, and to defend the neutrality of Scotland against the Russian revolutionary struggle. A plot based on espionage and covert violence is set against the seemingly tranquil Scottish rural backdrop Castle Gay: The Evallonians from a fictional Central European country visit south west Scotland on a secret mission. The Nail-Biting Suspense story about the mistaken identity, kidnapping plot and threatening Communists, all centering at the castle of a rich newspaper magnate... The House of the Four Winds: The novel is set in the fictional Central European country of Evallonia in the early 1930s. It concerns the involvement of some Scottish visitors in the overthrow of a corrupt republic and the restoration of the monarchy... John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist and historian and also served as Canada's Governor General. His 100 works include nearly thirty novels, seven collections of short stories and biographies. But, the most famous of his books were the adventure and spy thrillers and it is for these that he is now best remembered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Webb (1831-1915) was a British architect known as a founder of the Arts and Crafts movement and also a key member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle. He was an important figure in the literary and artistic world of the late-nineteenth century. Webb had a long association, both professionally and personally, with William Morris and his family as well as becoming treasurer of Morris's revolutionary Socialist League. They first met as trainees in the same architect's practice and remained collaborators throughout their lifetimes. Webb was responsible for the design of the hugely influential Red House, the Morris's first home. It was through Morris that Webb became connected with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, amongst others. Webb and Morris were also joint founders of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), the first organization to promote conservation rather than intrusive restoration. This comprehensive selection from Webb's surviving letters includes many important and previously unpublished letters to some of his closest associates. They reveal the wide range of his professional and personal interests. These four volumes will be of interest to art and architecture historians, scholars of Victorian history in general and of William Morris and the wider Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements in particular.

Henry, was an American short story writer. O. Henry's short stories are well known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. In his day he was called the American answer to Guy de Maupassant. While both authors wrote plot twist endings, O. Henry's stories were considerably more playful, and are also known for their witty narration. Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City and frequently feature characters with blue-collar jobs, such as policemen and waitresses. Porter also wrote poetry and non-fiction.
