Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burke was one of the greatest political thinkers whom England has produced, and all his writings, like his speeches, are characterised by the welding together of knowledge, thought, and feeling. Unlike most orators he is more successful as a writer than as a speaker. He rose too far above the heads of his audience, which the continued splendour of his declamation, his inordinate copiousness, and his excessive vehemence, often passing into fury, at length wearied, and even disgusted: but in his writings are found some of the grandest examples of a fervid and richly elaborated eloquence. Though he was never admitted to the Cabinet, he guided and influenced largely the policy of his party, while by his efforts in the direction of economy and order in administration at home, and on behalf of kindly and just government in India, as well as by his contributions to political philosophy, he laid his country and indeed the world under lasting obligations. This is volume seven out of twelve of his works, this volume containing fragments of speeches, an essay towards an abridgment of the English history, and others.

Book excerpt: This seventh volume of The Cambridge History of Judaism provides an authoritative and detailed overview of early modern Jewish history, from 1500 to 1815. The essays, written by an international team of scholars, situate the Jewish experience in relation to the multiple political, intellectual and cultural currents of the period. They also explore and problematize the 'modernization' of world Jewry over this period from a global perspective, covering Jews in the Islamic world and in the Americas, as well as in Europe, with many chapters straddling the conventional lines of division between Sephardic, Ashkenazic, and Mizrahi history. The most up-to-date, comprehensive, and authoritative work in this field currently available, this volume will serve as an essential reference tool and ideal point of entry for advanced students and scholars of early modern Jewish history.

This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 605 documents presented in Volume 7 of The Papers of James Monroe date from April 1814, the midpoint of Monroe's term as secretary of state under President James Madison, to March 1817, just prior to his inauguration as president. Volume 7 opens in the midst of the War of 1812, documenting Monroe's role as military adviser to President Madison during an ill-fated defense of Washington in August 1814, his appointment as secretary of war in September 1814, and his return to the State Department in March 1815, when he began the work of normalizing relations with the European nations after the end of the Napoleonic wars. Relations with Great Britain remained uneasy, but Monroe reduced friction by negotiating the 1817 Rush-Bagot Treaty, which led to disarmament of the Great Lakes. Numerous documents detail the ill will between the United States and Spain caused by the war, disagreement over possession of Florida, and the revolutions in Spain's American colonies. The volume also addresses the presidential election of 1816. Monroe, in line with the accepted practice at the time, avoided any overt acts that would indicate he was seeking the office. Correspondence with friends and confidants and several campaign essays written by Monroe nevertheless reveal a strategy of a quiet campaign to garner support for his candidacy. Contains 605 documents covering the period April 1814–March 1817 Offers insights into both Monroe's public career and his private life, including family matters, health issues, friendships, and his participation in the social life of the capital Illuminates Monroe's roles as military advisor to former President Madison, secretary of war, secretary of state, and presidential candidate Provides details on the presidential campaign of 1816, during which Monroe followed accepted practice and made no public show of seeking the office, but privately worked to garner support for his candidacy

Download or read book Early Yorkshire Charters Volume 7 The Honour of Skipton written by William Farrer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thirteen-volume series, published for the Yorkshire Archaeological Society between 1914 and 1965, is an extensive collection of the pre-thirteenth-century deeds and charters of Yorkshire, which had previously remained largely unpublished. The first three volumes were expertly edited by William Farrer (1861-1924), after whose death Charles Travis Clay (1885-1978) took up the task. The series was well respected for the quality of Farrer's editing, which was only surpassed by that of Clay in the later volumes. Volume 7 (1947) is devoted to the Honour of Skipton, and covers the family of Cecily de Rumilly, founder of Embsay Priory. Breaking from Farrer's original scheme, the texts here extend into the first three quarters of the thirteenth century to form a coherent group relating to Skipton. Each text is accompanied by notes and discussion of points of interest. The volume also contains detailed indexes.
