Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this experiment was to study the reliability of duration as a measure of the spiral aftereffect. The results for 10 Ss indicate that duration is a highly reliable measure and that duration is a simple monotonic function of exposure-time. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Spiral After-Effect presents the visual phenomenon of the spiral after-effect in clinical investigations. This book explains how and under what conditions the illusion happens or can be modified. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the features of illusion that are similar to many of the characteristics of other movement perceptions, including vividness, velocity, and persistence. This text then examines the complex structure and the geometric function of the inducing stimulus. Other chapters consider the effects of drugs on the spiral illusion, which is rather strange when one considers the wide use of the phenomenon in patient groups who may be receiving substantial admixtures of compound for therapeutic purposes. This book discusses as well the relationship between intelligence and perception of the spiral after-effect. The final chapter deals with the conditioned after-effect. Clinical psychologists and readers who are interested in personality research will find this book useful.

Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume are all active researchers who have helped to shape the modern conception of MAE. Motion perception lies at the heart of the scientific study of vision. The motion aftereffect (MAE), probably the best known phenomenon in the study of visual illusions, is the appearance of directional movement in a stationary object or scene after the viewer has been exposed to visual motion in the opposite direction. For example, after one has looked at a waterfall for a period of time, the scene beside the waterfall may appear to move upward when ones gaze is transferred to it. Although the phenomenon seems simple, research has revealed surprising complexities in the underlying mechanisms, and offered general lessons about how the brain processes visual information. In the last decade alone, more than 200 papers have been published on MAE, largely inspired by improved techniques for examining brain electrophysiology and by emerging new theories of motion perception. The contributors to this volume are all active researchers who have helped to shape the modern conception of MAE. Contributors David Alais, Stuart Anstis, Patrick Cavanagh, Jody Culham, John Harris, Michelle Kwas, Timothy Ledgeway, George Mather, Bernard Moulden, Michael Niedeggen, Shin'ya Nishida, Allan Pantle, Robert Patterson, Jane Raymond, Michael Swanston, Peter Thompson, Frans Verstraten, Michael von Grunau, Nicolas Wade, Eugene Wist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The proposed three volumes are the latest installment in Ian Howard's amazing ongoing project of providing the most comprehensive review available anywhereof all aspects of how humans and animals perceive and navigate the three-dimensional world. The current book set is even more complete in its coverage than the two previous editions have been. With 37 chapters, 1800 illustrations, and 8,000 references, it covers psychophysics, coding, physiology, development of systems and functions, results of deprivation, accommodation, physiology of disparity, binocular fusion and rivalry, binocular correspondence and the horopter, linking binocular images, cyclopean perception, stereo acuity, uses of disparity, stereopsis and perceptual organization, the Pulfrich effect, stereoscopic techniques and applications, distinguishing depth from vergence, perspective, shading, and motion parallax, constancies in visual depth perception, cue integrations, motion in depth, pathology of visual depth perception, animal depth perception, feeling, reaching, and moving, auditory distance perception, electrolocation and the thermal senses, as well as comprehensive coverage of animal navigation that could be a book on its own. Ian Howard's books have become landmarks in the field of vision science, and this current project will definitely maintain the tradition for researchers in space perception, visual neuroscience, ophthalmology, optometry, visual development, animal vision, and computational vision"--

Download or read book Differences in Visual Perception written by Jules Davidoff and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differences in Visual Perception: The Individual Eye examines the differences in visual perception that can occur in various circumstances when observers perceive the “same event. More specifically, the book considers the distinction between “what happens when a person looks at the world directly and when he sits with his eyes closed and thinks. This book is organized into five chapters and begins with an overview of differences in perception that are in operation for only a short time, emphasizing the distinction between short and long-term effects and at what point “short becomes “long. The reader is then introduced to the development of perception, touching on topics such as the nature-nurture issue, visual acuity and visual discrimination, color-vision, space perception, and attentional processes. The ambiguity of the stimulus is also discussed, along with the perceptual theory known as “transactionalism, how the visual world is interpreted, and the nature of the input to the visual system. The theme that runs throughout this work is the fact that the same external input does not necessarily bring about in all of us the same perception. This book will prove useful to students as well as established researchers interested in visual perception and cognition.

Book excerpt: This posthumous volume, the culmination of a long and distinguished career, brings together an original essay by the author together with a careful selection of previously published articles (most by Rock) on the theory that perception is an indirect process in which visual experience is derived by inference, rather than being directly and independently determined by retinal stimulation.

Book excerpt: The subject matter of this book is subliminal perception and microgenetic perceptual processing, two important topics on the interface between perception and personality. It presents a different way of handling these topics, biological in its emphasis on process, humanistic in its focussing on the dynamics of individual experience. The reader will not only find new theoretical perspectives but a host of new, efficient and penetrating methods for analyzing problems of personality and psychopathology. The book is filled with empirical data supporting its theoretical and methodological claims. Main Features: - New perspectives on information processing in relation to personality. - New methods applicable in many fields, such as clinical psychology, developmental and personality psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, education (creativity), etc. - Constructive analysis and critical review of the fields of subliminal perception and microgenesis.
