Download or read book The Lines Between Us written by Lawrence Lanahan and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful narrative—with echoes of Evicted and The Color of Law—that brings to life the structures, policies, and beliefs that divide us Mark Lange and Nicole Smith have never met, but if they make the moves they are contemplating—Mark, a white suburbanite, to West Baltimore, and Nicole, a black woman from a poor city neighborhood, to a prosperous suburb—it will defy the way the Baltimore region has been programmed for a century. It is one region, but separate worlds. And it was designed to be that way. In this deeply reported, revelatory story, duPont Award–winning journalist Lawrence Lanahan chronicles how the region became so highly segregated and why its fault lines persist today. Mark and Nicole personify the enormous disparities in access to safe housing, educational opportunities, and decent jobs. As they eventually pack up their lives and change places, bold advocates and activists—in the courts and in the streets—struggle to figure out what it will take to save our cities and communities: Put money into poor, segregated neighborhoods? Make it possible for families to move into areas with more opportunity? The Lines Between Us is a riveting narrative that compels reflection on America’s entrenched inequality—and on where the rubber meets the road not in the abstract, but in our own backyards. Taking readers from church sermons to community meetings to public hearings to protests to the Supreme Court to the death of Freddie Gray, Lanahan deftly exposes the intricacy of Baltimore’s hypersegregation through the stories of ordinary people living it, shaping it, and fighting it, day in and day out. This eye-opening account of how a city creates its black and white places, its rich and poor spaces, reveals that these problems are not intractable; but they are designed to endure until each of us—despite living in separate worlds—understands we have something at stake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In There’s a Disco Ball Between Us, Jafari S. Allen offers a sweeping and lively ethnographic and intellectual history of what he calls “Black gay habits of mind.” In conversational and lyrical language, Allen locates this sensibility as it emerged from radical Black lesbian activism and writing during the long 1980s. He traverses multiple temporalities and locations, drawing on research and fieldwork conducted across the globe, from Nairobi, London, and Paris to Toronto, Miami, and Trinidad and Tobago. In these locations and archives, Allen traces the genealogies of Black gay politics and cultures in the visual art, poetry, film, Black feminist theory, historiography, and activism of thinkers and artists such as Audre Lorde, Marsha P. Johnson, Essex Hemphill, Colin Robinson, Marlon Riggs, Pat Parker, and Joseph Beam. Throughout, Allen renarrates Black queer history while cultivating a Black gay method of thinking and writing. In so doing, he speaks to the urgent contemporary struggles for social justice while calling on Black studies to pursue scholarship, art, and policy derived from the lived experience and fantasies of Black people throughout the world.

This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent peace initiative (a common word) in Muslim-Christian relations, emphasis on the way forward between Islam and Christianity has been a frantic call to "love of God and love of neighbor." This call, argued in this book, provokes rival and parallel logic in the concepts of monotheism between Christian religious leaders and scholars on the one hand and Islamic religious leaders and scholars on the other. Using in places the framework of critical discourse analysis (CDA), the author analyzes some text extracts from a common word in order to expose the underlying problems of ideologies, dichotomies, identity constructions, and orthodoxy claims that are associated with the Islamic Tawhid and Christian Trinity. Drawing from various conferences and workshops convened by both religious communities as well as some social scientist insights, this book finds authentic communication in Muslim-Christian relations grounded in recognition and acceptance of the differences between Islam and Christianity. Recognizing the ideological issues in the usage of the appositional pronouns us Muslims and you Christians as suggesting dichotomy, the author suggests rather the education of both Muslims and Christians, starting from the kindergarten on the religion and beliefs of the other and to re-interpret and revise conflicting Qur'anic and biblical issues pertaining to Muslim-Christian relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks consist of small, mostly battery powered computers. Despite their simplicity, each sensor node is equipped with its own memory, CPU and radio transceiver. A typical application is to scatter many of them over a large area. Some sensor nodes can take measurements like temperature, air pressure and humidity. The latest models can also capture audio and images. But even the simplest capabilities like monitoring the temperature can be used e.g., to detect and fight forest fires at an early stage. The strength of this new paradigm comes from the mere number of nodes. Messages are forwarded over long distances from node to node. However, a sensor network does not only provide its own communication infrastructure. Within this book, it will also be shown how it can be used like a massively distributed database or as a compute cluster which filters and analyzes its data prior to transmission. A key-factor to the success of a sensor network is its longevity. Communication algorithms for medium access, routing but also for encryption and time synchronization have to be redesigned carefully with energy efficiency in mind.

Book excerpt: The True Story of a devious killer and the average woman who did what the police couldn't do. A terrible crime is made all the more unfathomable when the least likely suspect is accused, and a woman must put aside her grief to aid the police before the chance at justice is lost forever. These are circumstances in which one extraordinary woman finds herself entwined in "Citizen Jane," a Hallmark Channel Original Movie which tells the true story of the lone woman who refused to let a killer escape, even at the risk of her own life. Jane Alexander had it all: A wonderful family, personal and financial success and a deep romance with Tom O'Donnell. A family friend for 25 years prior to their romance, Tom helped Jane cope with the death of her husband, and captivated her wit his charming, unflappable personality. But Jane's picturesque life came crashing down around her the morning she received the news that her beloved aunt had been murdered. Slowly, astonishingly, the evidence began to point to the last person Jane would ever believe capable of such an act: Tom. As she began to comprehend the unfathomable, the depth of his deceit grew, as she realized he had fled with tens of thousands of dollars of her money, forcing her to sell her possessions and move into a dilapidated old house. Their investigation did not go unnoticed, however, and Tom O'Donnell would not allow himself to be caught easily. Seeing as his original plan was to murder Jane as well, he saw no reason not to carry out this act, thus removing the last obstacle to the life he had plotted and murdered to obtain. With everything and almost everyone telling her that her quest was futile, and with a remorseless killer determined to take any action necessary to remain free, time was not on Jane Alexander's side. In fact, she would come to learn that very little was on her side at all.
