Book excerpt: "Brownlee writes with all the breathless excitement and excruciating longing of a first love, further complicated by the forbidden nature of their romance. . . One of the most believable love triangles on the page in ages."--Entertainment Weekly An attraction between foster siblings sets fire to forbidden love in this contemporary reimagining of Wuthering Heights. Emma’s life has always gone according to her very careful plans. But things take a turn toward the unexpected when she falls in love for the first time with the one person in the world who’s off-limits: her new foster brother, the gorgeous and tormented Dylan McAndrews. Meanwhile, Emma’s AP English class is reading Wuthering Heights, and she’s been assigned to echo Emily Bronte’s style in an epistolary format. With irrepressible feelings and no one to confide in, she’s got a lot to write about. Distraught by the escalating intensity of their mutual attraction, Emma and Dylan try to constrain their romance to the page—for fear of threatening Dylan’s chances at being adopted into a loving home. But the strength of first love is all-consuming, and they soon get enveloped in a passionate, secretive relationship with a very uncertain outcome. Tiffany Brownlee's Wrong in All the Right Ways marks the exciting debut of a fresh voice in contemporary teen fiction. Christy Ottaviano Books

Book excerpt: Some have said that the word scam is too strong for a book that argues against the church's most sacred cow, but scam is exactly the right word because tithing has been put forth as a duty that will earn that which Christ suffered and died to freely give us. Not only is it wrong to suggest that tithing will do what Christ died to do, such as open heaven or make one right with God, but such teaching is an insult to His sacrifice and in reality, an enemy to the Cross even as circumcision was in the early church. Our ministers have been naively leading the church back under the Old Testament Law, and its curse, with imagined tithing promises that have gone way beyond even that which Malachi promised. Under the guise of obedience, faithfulness and stewardship, we've been duped into believing we must prove ourselves without realizing that practicing the Law (tithing) blocks us from becoming sons and heirs according to Galatians 4: 5. Do you know that The book of Malachi was never intended to be instruction to the New Testament church? All the ordinances in Malachi (including tithing) were nailed to Jesus' cross, according to Colossians chapter 2? Tithing is part of the Law according to Matt. 23: 23, Malachi 3: 7, and Hebrews 7: 18? The practice of tithing, the Law, can expose you to the curse of the Law causing incurable sicknesses, debt, death, and many other problems, according to the Apostle Paul in Galatians 3: 10? The practice of tithing actually removes you from the state of grace and places you back the category of sinner? Hebrews 5: 4 Tithing causes you to frustrate the grace of God, and causes Christ to profit you nothing? Galatians 2: 21 and 5: 2 Making tithing a practicetoday actually causes the New Testament to become another gospel according to Paul in Galatians 1: 6? Order The Great Tithing Scam today and find out what else tithing will or won't do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are natural rights 'nonsense on stilts', as Jeremy Bentham memorably put it? Must the very notion of a right be individualistic, subverting the common good? Should the right against torture be absolute, even though the heavens fall? Are human rights universal or merely expressions of Western neo-imperial arrogance? Are rights ethically fundamental, proudly impervious to changing circumstances? Should judges strive to extend the reach of rights from civil Hamburg to anarchical Basra? Should judicial oligarchies, rather than legislatures, decide controversial ethical issues by inventing novel rights? Ought human rights advocates learn greater sympathy for the dilemmas facing those burdened with government? These are the questions that What's Wrong with Rights? addresses. In doing so, it draws upon resources in intellectual history, legal philosophy, moral philosophy, moral theology, human rights literature, and the judgments of courts. It ranges from debates about property in medieval Christendom, through Confucian rights-scepticism, to contemporary discussions about the remedy for global hunger and the justification of killing. And it straddles assisted dying in Canada, the military occupation of Iraq, and genocide in Rwanda. What's Wrong with Rights? concludes that much contemporary rights-talk obscures the importance of fostering civic virtue, corrodes military effectiveness, subverts the democratic legitimacy of law, proliferates publicly onerous rights, and undermines their authority and credibility. The solution to these problems lies in the abandonment of rights-fundamentalism and the recovery of a richer public discourse about ethics, one that includes talk about the duty and virtue of rights-holders.

Download or read book Explaining Right and Wrong written by Benjamin Sachs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explaining Right and Wrong aims to shake the foundations of contemporary ethics by showing that moral philosophers have been deploying a mistaken methodology in their efforts to figure out the truth about what we morally ought to do. Benjamin Sachs argues that moral theorizing makes sense only if it is conceived of as an explanatory project and carried out accordingly. The book goes on to show that the most prominent forms of moral monism—consequentialism, Kantianism, and contractarianism/contractualism—as well as Rossian pluralism, each face devastating explanatory objections. It offers in place of these flawed options a brand-new family of normative ethical theories, non-Rossian pluralism. It then argues that the best kind of non-Rossian pluralism will be spare; in particular, it will deny that an action can be wrong in virtue of constituting a failure to distribute welfare in a particular way or that an action can be wrong in virtue of constituting a failure to rescue. Furthermore, it also aims to show that a great deal of contemporary writing on the distribution of health care resources in cases of scarcity is targeted at questions that either have no answers at all or none that ordinary moral theorizing can uncover.

Book excerpt: For Paul Ferrini, there was a time when the very thought of Jesus left him cold. Instead of embodying the truth of Jesus' teaching, Christianity seemed to harbor the fearful thoughts and actions of people who were more committed to self-interest than to unconditional love. So when Ferrini felt Jesus' voice inside him saying, "I want you to acknowledge me," he resisted. In time, however, he came to realize that it was not Jesus he was rejecting but the untruths that had become attached to Christian teaching. Responding to the inner voice did not mean merely acknowledging Jesus as some great teacher who lived in the past, but also meant that he was opening himself up to a living presence within his own awareness. Once Ferrini reached this reconciliation, powerful words of spiritual truth began to flow through him. Reflections of the Christ Mind presents the most important teachings the author has received through his spiritual awakening. Here at last is a gospel devoted solely to Jesus' teachings of love, healing, and forgiveness. The teacher readers meet in these pages is both compassionate and open-minded-he is the Jesus Christians know in their hearts. Repudiating religious hypocrisy, intolerance, and spiritual pride, Ferrini rejects the dogmatic position of the Church, offering instead words of hope and healing that form the new gospel for today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An amateur sleuth with an eye for fakes is on the lookout for a murderer in this mystery by Agatha Christie’s favorite American author. What begins as a courtesy call on his wife’s friend, Miss Julia Paxton, turns into another case for Henry Gamadge, antiquarian book dealer, handwriting expert, and amateur detective. Miss Paxton presents Gamadge with a mystery: a framed etching that had always hung in the hallway of the Ashbury mansion has suddenly sprung an inscription dated 1793. Miss Paxton swears nothing had been written on that portrait before the previous Sunday. Did Iris Vance, a relative and professional medium, made it happen? And how? Henry Gamadge is pretty sure the solution to this mystery has nothing to do with the supernatural, but he can’t quite make out what it all means. Was it a joke? Petty larceny? Or is something much more dangerous going on, and has Gamadge somehow stumbled onto a criminal conspiracy?

Book excerpt: When we got to the end of the street, we tried to think of where to go trick or treating next. “I think we should go to Cedar Street,” Carrie said. “Why Cedar Street?” I asked. “Those are small houses, not rich ones.” “Yeah,” Carrie answered. “But they are close together. We can hit more houses in less time.” I had to admit she had a point. “OK,” I agreed with her. Suddenly I saw a lane branching off from the end of the turn-around. “What’s that?” I asked. Carrie stared at it in the darkness. The lane quickly disappeared into a mass of trees. “There’s a sign,” she said. “And there’s a light on the sign,” I added. “And a pumpkin decoration beneath it!” We hurried forward. “Wrong Way Round Hall,” she read.
